The dark grey patches on the moon are called “maria” which is Latin for seas. This is because it was believed that these patches were oceans.
The moons colour changes based on the atmosphere. How thick it is and what light can get through. For example, this was on a hot night of the year with lots of humidity.
We only see one side of the moon. The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth and does not have its own axis to rotate on.
